Tax Specialist Job Description


Job Summary:

The Tax Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of federal, state and local employment tax returns for TempWorks Software, Lone Oak Payroll and its clients. This position maintains compliance with changing tax laws to support the overall tax initiatives of Lone Oak Payroll and TempWorks Software, including correspondence with government and local or state agencies as necessary. The Tax Specialist is also responsible for professional communications with clients pertaining to onboarding, state registrations, notices, and overall financial questions related to employment taxes.


General Responsibilities:

  • Maintains high level of understanding of business tax requirements
  • Prepares and reconciles tax payments, returns, amendments and related reports in a timely manner
  • Follows expectations and documentation with extreme attention to detail
  • Balances tax payments and researches a resolution to tax notices
  • Communicates directly with local, state and federal agencies regarding employment, withholding, and unemployment taxes
  • Manages ticket queues as assigned per company SLAs
  • Collaborates with leadership and internal partners to recommend process improvements
  • Responds to client questions and verification requests
  • Assists clients with compliance and state registrations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of payroll and tax procedures with aptitude for math/accounting
  • Thorough understanding of employment taxes and business taxes as a whole
  • Maintain active PTIN with IRS
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changing environments and multiple priorities
  • Capable of effectively prioritizing changing responsibilities to manage time and responsibilities


 Education and Experience:

  • IRS Annual Filing Season Program or equivalent certification, renewed annually
  • High school degree required, undergraduate degree in accounting, business, or related field is preferred
  • 1+ year of experience with bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, or equivalent
  • Minimum one years of customer service experience required


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.


The pay range for this role is: $48,000 - $68,000
